UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Mr. Miroslav Jenča has undertaken a visit to the Maldives from 21-22 February 2015. Mr. Jenča's visit follows the invitation from the Government of the Republic of Maldives upon a request made by H.E. Mr. Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, President of the Republic of Maldives to H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary General of the UN in July 2015.

During the visit, the Assistant Secretary General paid a courtesy call on President Yameen on 21 February 2016. During the meeting, the President briefed Mr. Jenĉa on the current political situation of the country.  The President highlighted that the Political Party Talks are one of the important ways to build confidence between the relevant political actors in the country. That could also create a conducive environment on which the Government could focus on implementing the economic development projects and accelerate the democracy consolidation process. Mr. Jenĉa welcomed the Government's initiative to hold the Party Talks and also assured the assistance of the UN during the talks.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Ms. Dunya Maumoon, met with Mr. Jenca and exchanged views on how UN can work with the Maldives for stronger engagements.  During the visit, the Assistant Secretary General also met with the judges of the Supreme Court, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, civil society of the Maldives and key political parties.
