Maldives has called for special focus to the small island developing states while developing the new climate agreement. The call was made at the on-going negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held in Bonn, Germany.
Speaking at the opening plenary, Ambassador Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations highlighted the significant findings of the fifth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and urged that the decisions need to be made in light of these important scientific findings. He stressed that these decisions must lead to actions that will maintain a global average temperate below 1.5 o C from the pre-industrial level.
Maldives also underscored the importance of loss and damage to be part of the new climate agreement to be adopted in Paris 2015.
As the countries are to submit their nationally determined contributions by mid 2015, Maldives urged to provide the necessary financial and technological resources to fulfill these commitments. In addition, Maldives pressed on to maintain the sustainability of the existing funds such as the Adaptation Fund making sure that adequate resources are available to implement the projects.
The fortieth session of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 40) and the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 40), as well as the fifth part of the second session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP) are taking place at the climate conference which began on 4 June 2014.
The Maldives delegation to the Ministerial segment of this Conference is to be headed by the Minister of State for Environment Abdullahi Majeed, which is scheduled for 5-6 of this month.
