Speaking today at a Special Event on Promoting South-South and Triangular Cooperation on Climate Change and the Launch of the Southern Cliamte Partnership Incubator to support the SDGs, Minister Thoriq Ibrahim highlighted the importance of the significant role South South cooperation in the development trajectory of the Maldives. Noting the structural challenges and vulnerability to extreme weather and disasters faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) such as the Maldives, the Minister also noted the long standing recognition in the Maldives, of working with a wide array of stakeholders. "Genuine and durable South-South partnerships are instrumental to the mobilisation of human and financial resources, expertise, technology and knowledge. Above all, partners are powerful drivers of change", he noted.

Panelists spoke about combatting climate change, highlighting that it is a crosscutting within the Sustainable Development Goals, in addition to being a Goal in itself. The role that the United Nations can play in supporting Member States and other key stakeholders was also discussed, as well as the need to strengthen the relationship between these different entities. Different representative of UN Agencies also spoke during this event. Civil society and the private sector's perspectives were heard.
