New York, 18 July 2016; Maldives and Italy, in their capacity as Co-Chairs of the Steering Committee on Partnerships for SIDS, with UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, hosted an event during the Partnership Exchange held on the margins of the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. The Partnership Dialogue is a forum to discuss best practices and share successes and challenges with regards to partnerships for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), as part of the SIDS Partnership Framework, a mechanism established at the 2014 SIDS Conference in Samoa to support monitoring and reporting of partnerships.

Three representatives from successful partnerships presented their progress, shared key lessons learned, and encouraged the creation of new partnerships. As co-chair of the Steering Committee on Partnerships on SIDS, HE Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the UN, called for strengthened partnerships in order to further address the ongoing challenges SIDS face, such as capacity building and disaster risk reduction.

The SIDS Partnership Dialogue was held during the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development’s Partnership Exchange. The Partnership Exchange is intended to showcase global partnerships for sustainable development for all countries, particularly developing countries. The SIDS Partnership Framework was lauded as a success and example of leadership throughout the Exchange, as it is the first initiative to implement a reporting tool, as well as specific SMART criteria (SIDS Specific, Measurability, Attainable, Realistic, Timely) for its partnerships. There are over 300 SIDS partnerships registered currently.
